Have you ever seen a young child discovering drawing for the first time? You give him a crayon and a piece of paper and you show him what happens when he moves his crayon across the page and WOW the fun begins! At that moment, the child realizes HE is doing these marks on the paper. HE is doing something that everyone can see… HE is leaving a little bit of himself on the paper and he loves it. If you give him a choice of colors the child will let his eyes decide what he feels like at that moment. Making a nice drawing is not important for him as he doesn’t know what a nice drawing is.
His drawings become stories about himself: what’s important to him, if he is happy or sad, what he likes, doesn’t like, his family, his dreams, what he understands about the world around him, etc. Then, unless he is encouraged or he learns to draw, at 9 years old he STOPS!
This is true for most of us. But what if we reconnect with the child in us.
We have learned to write, without necessarily become a writer, and we use words to express ourselves in a journal like the one with TMC.
